Poker strategy IV
A basic poker playing strategy is the knowledge of the gap concept according to which a player is required to have a strong hand if his opponent has opened or raised the bet and his hand must be better than he would have needed to open or raise the wager himself. This is because the player must have the best hand to win if he is matching his strength with others whereas if he was only opening, he stood the chance to win by not even doing showdown as others might fold their hands. According to the strategy of sandwich effect, the gambler who wishes to continue being a part of the pot needs a better hand if there are other players yet to act. This is because, he has no way of knowing how subsequent players will call or raise and whether he may get another chance to raise, so without a string hand, his chance of winning remains doubtful.
In a game of poker calling discreetly is a valuable tactics of play. The most fundamental reasons why players call is to play passively or when he is planning to see more cards exposed or when he has just the right pot odds and increase in pot size may jeopardize his chances to win. It is universally accepted that calling and not racing is the surest way to prevent the original player who started the wager from the option to re-raise. When more than one betting rounds are involved in a hand of play, then anyone with a strong hand may call so that his strength of hand may remain concealed until the latter rounds of betting which means the pot size would increase. Again, by not raising with a good hand but by calling, the player allows subsequent gamblers to make mistake of overcalling which also makes pot size to grow. Once, the latter betting rounds happen and the pot is already large, now the player can wager according to his strength and stand the chance to win the pot.
